Tranmission not shifting

My 96 305 chevy transmission has recently failed to shift to 3rd gear on two occaisions. After letting off the accelerator it would shift on the second attempt both times. Has not happened again lately. Any ideas?

could be a solenoid going bad, trash in the valve body, tps sensor, speed sensor, prndl switch on the transmission, or maybe even the clutches going out. I know it sounds kinda complicated. If you have any more problems I would suggest going to a trusted tranny shop and having them hook a scanner to it. hope this helps.
