Unhappy Need more power!!

Alright, so i've got a 305 in my 86 Chevy longbed, not near enough power. Now, if i decided to start modding it what should i do first to get the most power, or is it not worth it and should i get a 350, 383 stroker?? haha Thanks in advance.

O.K. here it is, the 305 is a real reliable motor that is quite often overlooked as a performance engine. unfortunately in your situation this is not the case. The 305 can be a good performer if built right for a lighter application vehicle. Without tearing it down and replacing those dish top pistons however it wil be underpowered as a performance application in a heavier vehicle. There is an old racing phrase that comes to mind here. There is no replacemant for displacement. meaning the bigger the motor, the faster you go.Simple enough. Anyhow I recommend looking areound for a good 350 core, if you have to build a motor you might as well start with a bigger motor that has a larger platform as far as budget performance parts. Yes all small block parts interchange, but there arent alot of high performance factory heads laying around for a 305. If you install big valve heads on your motor now with its dished top pistons it will be a real dog. Start with a 350. my advice. if you find one drop me a P.M. And I can send you a parts list to build on a budget and get a good solid performer. be sure to keep the tail lights clean thou, Give the ford and dodge guys something to look at.
