P1404 Code

My 1998 Chevy K1500 truck shows "Service Engine Soon" intermittantly and gives a P1404 code - Aux. Emissions Control. What needs fixing?

I just did a quick search around, it could possibly be your EGR. You may want to check that is hooked up correctly and functioning.

I cleaned the carb & EGR riser tube (?) inside the carb, but "Service Engine Light" came back on again yesterday. I'm not sure where to look for EGR hook-up as suggested by 'Moostang'

Well I was more thinking that the EGR had everything connected properly, like the vaccum line, any electrical type connection and it is screwed down tight.

This "Service Engine Soon" light comes on like clock work every time I drive about 40 miles on open highway. Goes out after three engine restarts. Doesn't come on just driving short trips around town. Maybe the P1404 code I got just needs to be cleared out of memory - is there a way I can do that without having to take it to Chev. dealer??

if you know how to use an obd II scanner, Oreilly's usually has one to loan. If you know the guys pretty well they'll usually let you borrow it in the parking lot without have to put down a huge deposit

wojeepster will become famous soon enoughwojeepster will become famous soon enough
the reason it only comes on when you take the long trip is that egr is only energized in high gear part throttle to lower combustion temperature and there by lowers oxides of nitrogen. When you drive around town it never gets energized.

Does the 'jeepster' in your name imply you have a Jeepster - my first car was a 1949 model.
