Engine swap ?

Hello, I just put a new cab on my 72 chevy 4x4. I'm having a problem my valve covers are about 1/4" away from the fire wall and the fan is about 12" away from the radiator. That doesn't seem right to me but the old cab was the same way. Unless the previous owner didn't install the engine crossmember right. Can any body tell me if the engine crossmember would be in backwards? It is shaped like a u and it is u'd towards the firewall. Should it be u'd towards the radiator? If anyone has messed with these old trucks before can someone let me know? I'm going to take the sheet metal off to paint and I think this would be the best time to switch the cross member. That way I won't scratch the new body. Thanks!

Is It A Manual Transmission Or An Automatic. And Also If The Engine Mounts Are In The Proper Place It Is Probably Correct. Does There Seem To Be Any Thing On The Engine Touching The Cab If Not Then U Are In The Clear. On My 72 It Also Had Alot Of Room In Front Of The Radiator There Should Be A Good Sized Fan Shroud On The Radiator If There Is Not I Would Recommend Getting One Or In The Summer Monthes U Will Find Your Engine Temp A Little Higher Than U Would Like It To Be. On My 69 There Is Two Locations For The Engine The Bolt Holes That Are Set Back More Torwads The Cab Are For A Manaul The More Forward Are For An Automatic I Fond This Out When I Swapped To An Automatic. Also I Don't Think It So Easy To Put The Crossmembers In Backwards If The Previous Owner Did I Think There Would Be Alot Of Missmatching With The Drive Shafts And The Engine And Tranny Mounts, He Would Almost Have To Modify Just To Get It Back Together And That Would Be Noticeable. I Have Noticed That 4x4 The Engine Does Set Back Ferther To Accomidate The Front Axle Clearance.
