02 Silverado water pump.

Well, my water pump is leaking, It looks like it is a seal failure where the pump bolts to the block. I can see the weep hole and it is dry.

Any one have any experience with removal of these new Aluminum pumps? How much do you all think a dealer would charge to do the job?

GM seems to make bad pumps lately. well, within the past 10 yrs. i went through a period of changin the pump 3 times in about a 1yr period on my 99' burban. all three times it was leakin out of the witness holes. and my dad has been through his fair share on his 96' silverado. but it's not hard to do at all, i'm 17 and can do it fairly easily.

I the shop I work in we have seen very few water pump failures on the new body style trucks and other than getting the fan off the pump pulley I think is is easier that the old water pumps to replace.

I called the dealer today. I am taking it in Wednesday to let them do the job. $460 to do the job. $220 of that is for the pump. Plus I will need to rent a car for a day $35

I kind of feel ashamed of my self for letting the dealer do the job, however

I dont have a heated work area.
I still would have to pay for the part
These new Aluminum motors, you cant make any mistakes. So I look at the other $200 as a good insureance policy.

I know its just a water pump, but I am still making payments on this thing and I cant afford to strip any threads or risk overheating the motor because of something I missed. If the dealer screws up, it's on them.

But you dont know for sure the quality of work performed. If you had a place to do it i would advise you to do it yourself, but I understand your situation

Took the truck to the dealer today. Then went to enterprise rent a car to get a temp ride. Guess what they put me in? Top of the line F-150 loaded with every option. This is not what a man needs to be exposed to when his
old horse lays down on him

Tell you all what, Ford is making some nice trucks now.

So you bought all the water pumps directly from G.M.?

GM pumps, not bought from GM though, from a general parts warehouse
