1989 Silverado S2500 Tranny only works after 15 minute warmup???

I'm considering buying a 1989 Silverado with Automatic Tranny.
It wouldn't move in any gear until it warmed up 15 minutes. All gears
worked after that warm up time. The ATF was a bit on the low side but
I don't think that the ATF level was the problem although I have no clue.

Does anyone have any experience with this or have any suggestions?
Thanks!

Plan on rebuilding the tranny if you do buy it. Depending on how low it was it could be a major issue as well.

Tranny woes!

Sounds like the tranny is full of sludge. Id start with a complete tranny flush and seal check, may an internal seal leak. Depending on the mileage, you might just want to dump the tranny and go with a remanufactured one. Stay away from rebuilts, unless you personally know the builder and trust him and his work or youll be replacing the tranny again in a year or two. Start out small and have a local shop pressure test your tranny and its seals. If its a seal problem then go ahead with the repair and make sure they clean out all of the old fluid and particals.

Keep 'em rollin!!!

seals are probably hard, will need to be rebuilt. Some of the trany additives my the seals more pliable for awhile but its not a long term fix

I agree with gmtech. Just leaking back and unable to hold pressure

I hope the guy selling it is willing to knock some off the price for a bad tranny
take the money you save to put toward having tranny replaced
can try to have flushed and new filter and keep money in bank till it goes out
