They do work but not for anything like a 20 - 30 hp gain. More along the lines of a 5 - 10. They do really well for transmission shift points and firmness though. And correcting your speedo if you have different than stock size tires on it.

You need more air in like a k&n cold air kit, which will be even better through bigger exhaust or just duel if you have single, modules do help and pulleys will put less strain on the crank for faster rotation, but you'll find your self at times with lower alternator output some times.. hope this helps

What about removing the CAT? I have an 89 and we don't have smog checks so would it help with power/MPG?

i'm not sure, but i think that would mess with your o2 sensor readings, which would in-turn, more than likely, mess up your fuel-to-air ratio.... not positive on that though

I know alot of people who remove cat. I know its definitely not cool with passing inspection here in NY though...not sure about other states.

here in texas after a vehicle hits 25 it passes a grandfather clause. Don't matter what you do to it

Or if it came from the factory with no emission controls you don't have to run them.

As for removing the cat(s) yeah they will definately allow for more flow outta the exhaust if you remove them which can allow for more power.

Real power from a 350? Bolt ons arent worth it. K&N cold intakes are a joke I replaced mine the only noticeable thing is the ungodly whine from under the hood when you really get on it. I have a 99 K2500 crew 5.7 vortec with true 3" duals from the headers back. I get slightly better mileage ( which means a little more power) but nothing noticeable. True power thats noticable, build the engine; change the cam ( biggest cheapest power builder) dont know what year your truck is but throw in the 327 or rv/marine cam check with parts store for exact application. Bore the cylinders, change the heads find a set of double hump (2.02) once again check for the year match pre 86 are easiest to match if your engine is later youll have to change the intake wich youll want to do anyways to match the older heads. Or depending on your budget go to advance and buy a built motor, 350 to 450 horse small blocks can be found from $1200 to $3000 check ebay I have bought 2 engines 400hp sbc for my boat and 450hp for my 67 camaro paid less than 2500 for each both from different sellers. Anyway do some research find a good engine machine shop in your area small block horse power is easy to come buy and built horsepower is about 2:1 compared to bolt on per dollar.
Long live the sbc

Dont just hop on a cam without checking for specs for your application and driving habits. There are better ways to get a good cam than to use older technology camshafts with all the technology and custom grinds these days. As for the old 2.02/ 1.60 heads aviod these, I recommend using the vortes L31 heads they flow way better and they have accassory holes so you dont have to do alot of weird stuff trying to bolt up your alternator and A/C. I do agree with bolt on horsepower being the only real way to get true ponies
