1994 Chevy Truck - Automatic Transmission

I have a 94 chevy 3/4 ton 2 wheel drive truck that is experiencing transmission problems. It will not shift from 2 to 3rd but when you let off on the gas and sort of "feather" it in it will shift.

The fluid was a little brown, changed that and the filter but that didn't do anything. It seems like it is an electrical issue, any ideas? or is it a tranny rebuild.

Has the fluid ever been changed prior to this problem. If not how many miles are on the tranny. You might of just caused yourself a major upset. If the fluid has never been changed the viscosity breaks down and the clutches and parts get used to running on that thinner fluid. By replacing the fluid you have this new thicker fluid that ends up hurting you more than helping. The second to third sounds like the clutches are going bad and need to be replaced anyways. Your best bet would be to have it rebuilt.

Don't know if the fluid was changed prior to the problem as I am a recent owner (3,000 miles I have put on). The truck has 100K on it and was a city truck so I think the maintenance was good.

Oh, I failed to mention when this problem happens the speedometer goes to zero and then reads correctly when it finally shifts.

What are the possibilities that it is the speed sensor?

Thumbs up Tranny Problem Fix!

These trannies are garbage. GM designed them with under rated parts that wont hold up under higher mileage or offroad usage. The servos arent big enough, the pin is too short and the bands are not geared for the power of the the chevy engine just to name a few. I had a similar problem with my tranny. In my 2nd to 3rd shift, the tranny cut loose and the rpms went through the roof. If I babied it I could get it through the transistion to the next shift, but that only last for a little while. Replace the tranny, dont rebuild it. Theres a builder out of florida called megamax transmissions. You can find them on ebay for some of there transmissions. They build the upgraded transmission to avoid blowing out the same stuff again in thirty thousand or so. The tranny is shipped for free and comes with the Heavy duty or performance converter with your choice of the stall speed. It takes about a month to get, but its worth the wait as they build the tranny to your needs. Talk with Jeff and he can get to your new reman. tranny for under a grand with a warranty. I had my friend go through two transmissions in his 95' z71 before we found out about the trannies weaknesses and who builds them right. Let me know if I can help you out anymore!!!

Kick the tires and light the fires!!!!

Thanks YngPiggy! I bought the truck for $1500 (ex-wife got the new diesel) to pull a horse trailer on weekends. I don't want to throw a lot of money at if I don't have to.
