I have never seen a starter bolted to the trans. While I'm sure some car company has done this (nothing surprises me anymore) I don't believe GM has ever done this. Anyway, I wouldn't run the engine with the trans not bolted up as the rear trans mount is the third point of contact for the mounting (no engine support on the back of the block to the frame) unless you have a custom set-up (many race cars have rear engine plates that mount the back of the block to the frame).

Yes G.M has done it. I had one on an older 60 era 3 speed standard trans.

Fair enough. CG, was that a non-V8?

Ford Does it. My 02 powerstroke had the starter bolted to the trans. Few other newer fords i've had the "pleasure" of working on have been the same.

I stand corrected. Am curious though...why would you do this? It seems to me that you would have to have what would be excessively tight manufacturing tolerances so the starter (mounted to trans) could engage the flywheel mounted to the engine (involving several major components). I'm sure it isn't an issue, but still for all these years the starter and flywheel were mounted to the engine and with the tolerance on location (starter bolt pattern) only involving one major component (engine block) it would be cheaper and easier.

Gm has done it again with the 06 Impala ss with the 5.3l they bolted it to the trany since there was no place else for it to fit.

chevy starters are bolted to the block.... As far as the oil leak goes.. It could be the sender unit if it is getting the bellhousing wet...
