I am not familiar with that (ford person) put if you use silicon that break is going to be weak point in that ring and if there is a large amount of pressure on the other side of the o ring then it will blow out through the silicon.
In my experience o-rings are using in highly pressurized areas, in parts that might move or in areas where you are likely to remove the parts making silicon a pain to constantly clean.

The only time I have every seen silicon gasket maker subsituted for a real gasket is for the cork gaskets(like around oil pans and valve covers), which is really what they were make to subsitute (although I personally will use the cork with a thin layer of silicon)

It is a hard to find part? I can't imagine it is to pricey.

Scottie,
Do not use a broken "O"-ring with goo on it. You can go to either www.mscdirect.com or www.mcmastercarr.com and order an "O"-ring for a few bucks. These are industrial supply houses and can have the one you need delivered in a few days.
Good luck.

Get a new o ring, If its worth fixing, its worth fixing right.
