Question Grinding noises

I have a 1978 silverado ,when i put it in gear i hear a grinding or clunking noises.i'm holding the brake while this is being done. pulled the cover to rear end spider gears ,axle gears, pin, clips, all seem to be fine;no metal shaving in pan. wheels will turn manually, can anyone give me a clue?

Sounds like carrier bearings to me. How does your mesh pattern on the teeth of the ping and pinion look?

all teeth look good, no signs of wear on them.could it be the u-joint?
