OK heres the deal a neighbor is selling a 1990 Chevy 1500 with around 160,000 miles on it under the hood all looks clean all stock, long bed. Interior is in good condition. As far as rust there is minimal. Needs some break work you need to pump them to get a good stop and there is a coolant leak some where this guy is not too mechanically inclined so thats why he is selling it. He bought it a year ago and paid $3,100 at a dealer and is asking $1,000 for it. Is it worth that or should I not even bother with it?

Doesn't sound like too bad of a deal to me,put you a couple 100 bucks in it and have you a work truck for under 1500.00.I have a 1992 with 350 5 speed,149,000 miles, motor still runs great and looks good too.Have had several friends call wanting it since I got a new one but I can't let her go. Good luck!!

I believe all it will need is a new thermostat because of the fluctuating engine temp as far as the coolant leak I'm not going to rule out a head gasket yet until I look at the oil for milkiness. As far as the breaks go idk might have a leak since the light comes on and the guy had to keep adding fluid. If I get 40k miles out of it it would be worth the price then if it's still in good shape a new motor can be dropped in.

If the brakes are more than just a leak, watch out. That truck has a ABS "dump valve" that has a tendency to go bad. Two separate mechanics looked at mine (I was stumped as to the problem) and diagnosed this. Price to have fixed $600.00. You can purchase the new dump valve for $91.00 and install in about an hour, but you will have to bleed the entire brake system. FYI, I love my '90 GMC and it has 171,000 miles and runs great. Good Luck.
