Thumbs down Horrible gas mileage

I just put a truck together and have horrible gas mileage. I'm getting 12mpg driving easy/highway....does anyone have a suggestion.. I was thinking of swapping out my ring and pinion for a higher ratio.

It is a 1990 chevy C1500 shortbed 2wd. It was a 454 SS I put a 350 TBI in it out of a 94.
The rear is a 3.73 and the trans is the 3 speed th400.
the computer is out of an 89 5.7L
I think I even got better gas mileage with the 454 computer still in it.

Egr would definitly make gas milage suck, also, 3 speed tranny doesnt help, i think its a comb of things. Does it rev at cruisin speeds? A 4 sp would help. Perhaps a taller gear ratio?

454 with a 3 speed, get used to it, I dont think you are onna get much better without going to an overdrive trans or a different motor.

Your lucky getting 12 outta it the way it is. The best I ever managed to get outta my old chevy was 8. That was with a carberated 350, TH400, and a 355 gear ratio. MY heavy foot didn't help much but even driving it normal still wasn't even close to being good.

im only going 55 - 65 on the highway to try to pick up a few extra mpg.
I should have put a 454 back in it it only gets 1mpg less

Partner, I have the same truck you have (1990 350 short-bed regular cab automatic) but I have overdrive trans. Around town I get 14-15 and I drive it like I'm in a drag race - all the time. Without the overdrive trans and those gears you have, you better just get used to it. Good luck.
