tranny

hey guys, just wondering, has anyone ever rebuilt a 4l60 tranny sucessfully? i mean maybe as a tranny specialist, but also as a everyday mechanic, quite knowledgable on how things work and competent enough to try it out? Question is, did it work out good and everything go ok? Researching it, i see its all about labeling and carefully seeing and acknowledging parts, not necessarily rocket science.

no it is not too hard. the biggest part is making sure the parts are facing the right directions. Some of the drums are kinda hard to dig into without a press. And you have to be CLEAN. That is the biggest killer. It's not something you want to do on the tailgate of a truck.

well, just to update, my planetary gears right in the back of the tranny were munched, still worked well, but boy those gears were bad!!!! Anyway, got new planetary, hub, sun gear, three sets of clutches were extremely good condition, replaced the common problem ones in the 700r, new band, seal kit, i did a complete overhaul and reused only the steels and the other three clutches, still had the lettering on them! Things worked well for me, and wasnt that hard, talked to a tranny specialist, and he told me a trick for putting the pump back together, two hose clams joined! worked good. new torque converter. All came to about $600 canadian, including vaseline , which is good! thats with oem quality parts. Automatic transmissions were mind boggling for me, but after the overhaul, pretty simple operation, but there was a lot of thought put into it when made! Rebuild would have been anywhere from $1500-2500 at a quality shop.
Thanks for the help, you guys were right, not hard at all!

its not hard just make sure that you are not rushing and you have everything facing the right way and try and do it in the cleanest place possible as any dirt can cause problems

Knew you could do it. I'm a recovering Silverado man who rebuilt a Ford C6 from a standpoint similar to yours. I've heard that the 4L60E uses a similar Simpson planetary set to the C6. If this is true, did you see how it creates overdrive? Can't figure that one out.

Congrats on the rebuild job.
