idle speed

i have a c20 and i just rebuilt a 283 to put in it. my problem is that the engine seems to run fine during idle in park, but when i put the truck into gear the engine drops in rpms and sounds like it wants to die. if i shift it back into park the rpms jump back up to normal. also when i drive it slowly it does alright, but if i mash the gas it hesistates and seems to make a popping sound inside the carb, and sometimes dies. i have messed with the fuel mixture on the carb and i checked all vacuums. im running out of things to check, any ideas would be great. thanks

First timing is if it is popping thru the carb. Set the timing correctly. Second why are you messing with the fuel air screws? Are you using a vacuum gauge to tune it? if not then your just guessing . Set the timing and then set the fuel air scres back to the highest vacuum you can get out of it and it will probally run like a top.

i know this sounds stupid, but where is the best place to hook up the vacuum gauge and how can i tell if i might have a intake manifold or other leak? i also cant seem to adjust the timing correctly, i am using a timing light. the engine seems to idle too high. what is the best way to get correct timing.

Correct timing by turning the distribuitor with the vacuum advance disconnected.Best place to hook up a vacuum gauge is a nonj essential vacuum port. Something that goes to a non essential place with constant vacuum. Adjust idle with idle screws not with fuel/air mix screws.
