carbartor problems on 83 chevy

i have a semi worked 350 with a 650 holley 4 barrel with vacume secondarys. the problem is that the secondarys will only come in when its cold, after the motor warms up and the choke opens all the way they won't come in at all. is there any part i should check. the part the lets them come on is good i have swapped that one with a working on and it still dosn't work. i have also swapped carbs to see if it would work, and it still won't work. any ideas

So no matter which caarb you install the secondaries wont work? i am just trying to clarify before I start in. you replaced the vacuum pod on your carb and no joy, then replaced the carb and it still isnt working? Sounds like a vacuum loss after it warms up. Thats odd.

yeah thats right. just to make sure the secondarys should come on when its reved in park, or power braked right. when its cold and you stomp on in you can feel start to take off then feel them come in strong, but after it warms up you can't feel them at all.

If it is a vacuum carb then you might not get them to open if you just rev it. i was origionally thinking it was too stiff of a secondary spring, but the different carb thing ruled out a carb problem. Do you have a big cam? With a big cam comes less vacuum. you may want to get a spring kit from holley and put in the yellow spring to help with overcoming low vacuum. Its easy to install, just 4 screws. i may have one in my garage in my holley kits. i will check tomorrow whan I get home. But i think you need a different spriing. you probally have the standard black spring in both carbs.

ok, i have another question. it has a eletric choke, and when i took the choke off to replace the secondary vacume thing, i noticed there was a small gasket there that goes in the choke. is this needed, i replaced with a seal i had, but i am not sure if it will withstand the heat. do auto shops sell this gasket and spring or should i but a kit. by the way this carb sat for about 6 years with gas in it, being ran maybe once every 3 months, could the gaskets and seals in it be bad?

Oh setting for 6 years with fuel in it is an automatic rebuild. Stop fighting the little gremlins and just rebuild the whole card. Probally get a little better fuel mileage as well.

They are pretty simple. Do you know anyone that is a decent mechanic that could help you out? You get them at the local parts store. Just take the numbers off the air horn and they can get you the correct kit.
