Alright ladies and gents, help with an S-10

Ok, now, my brothers 2000 S-10 has about 180,000 HARD driven miles on it, and it ran fine no problems. Weeeelllll, about the last 250 or so miles, it started making a "cowbell" like noise coming from beneath the vehicle. Well, we ran it like this for a while, then all of a sudden one day, the "cowbell" noise started REALLY loudly then the truck died........never to start again, when you try and start it up, it turns over, but doesn't start, seems like it wants to, but just doesn't, and if you hold it for long enough, i BELIEVE it backfires through the exhaust (which leads me to believe timing chain??) So, what does everyone think? thanks in advance

never heard a truck sound like a cow bell. when you try to start it does it sound like it's getting gas, or chug like it has a dead battery.....cowbell....(Scratch's head).

never heard a cowbell noise but it might be that the timing chain could have alot of slop and it was hitting the cover. if that is the case it jumped time . unless it has a timing belt. the only other thing i can think of as far as that noise is the cat converter cover rattling.
