Chevy Step Van Motor Swap?

Hi all.

I'm looking at a Chevy P-30 Step Van. the 350 needs rebuilt, and I'm considering showing up on site with a motor and doing the swap there (finding a motor will be next!).

First off....would just about any chevy 350 from the same year (82) work fine? I would think any differences would be in the transmission moreso than the motor.

Secondly, anyone ever swap a motor on one of these? Motor comes out the front I assume? Are all bolts accessible from underneath and/or through doghouse in cab?

thanks.

As long as the motor is set up the same (carb/ throttle body etc..) there should be no problem swapping. Transmission won't be an issue. As for the accesability of the bolts I can't help you there.

get ready for some fun. the motor does come out after taking off the front grill and such but it does not just slip out. working on vans are alot more of a headache since you can not just lift the engine out. try and take as much off the top as you can as this will help it come out easier. Also, mind the distributor, it is very easy to beat on the way out. all the bolts that you are required to take off to remove it are accesssible. from doghouse and underneath both. you will find the tranny bolts alot easier to take out than normal i believe.
