Gas Mileage 96 Chevrolet

I have a 96 Ext Cab Shortbed 1500. it has 350 Vortec with auto/overdrive tranny. I figured im getting about 14mpg with what its showing....but my gas gauge bounces back and forth when i stop and take off and im also curious about that, dont know exactly how to fix that problem and am curious if maybe the gauge is just not accurate either and maybe thats why im figuring bad mpg. by the way no mods or anything completely stock tires and everything. dual in/dual out 40 series FM in the works though and a superchips programmer on the wishlist too, my buddy has one and its actually a pretty cool little toy.

hard stops and gos will make the gas move in the tank and bounce around your float, probably nothing wrong. fix the driver and your mpg should improve.

14 sounds good for a 350 to me

i used to barely get 13-14 mpg with my 4.3 vortec v6 s10

my fuel gauge bounced around a lot in that truck like you're describing...it also seems to 'reset' itself when you put it in park...it will usually bounce up a couple notches when you put it in park, usually enough to get rid of the 'low fuel' light for a little while. i know that doesn't mean you have more gas lol, just the gauge screwing around

my grand-dad has a 97 ext cab swb 1500 with the 4.3 vortec w/ auto trans and his truck gets alot better than 13-14, close to probably 16 around town and probably 19-20 on the highway, i cant believe an s10 would get that bad of mileage.

it was running great

i guess it was probably lead foot...but for me, when im in a vehicle that has the power, i use it. up hills, passing, when i turn onto a street with a 45 speed limit, i want to start going 45 already, maybe 50
the best milage i calculated was 14, the worst about 12..all city driving but still, its pretty bad. i could have driven like it was a 4 cyl and maybe got 16, but its not like i drove it all that fast anyways...i just used the available power when i needed it
