| Regular or Synthetic Oil?? OK guys, I've got a 2006 Silverado. It has about 5,000 miles on it and I've already done the first oil change. Should I go synthetic or regular? What would be an advantage to synthetic? Does slick 50 really work? |

| you could probably wait longer between oil changes maybe about as long as you waited for this one if you stick with regular, make sure you change it every 3k...i've heard you can maybe go 6 with synthetic i use regular or synthetic blend right now i have to change every 3k to keep my warranty intact so i just use regular |

| i run royal purple synthetic, changing it every 3 thousand miles. i think synthetics work better under higher temperatures. so theres no harm in switching to synthetic, its just more expensive. Last edited by devildog75; 08-19-2006 at 09:45 PM. |

| Synthetic oil works better in hotter running engines and lasts longer in between oil changes than "dino" oil. If you run synthetic oil, you can got between 6,000 and 10,000 miles in between changes. You also need to run a good oil filter; not the 2.99 Penske, Fram, etc. junk. I've had friends that have switched to synthetics everywhere in their rigs (engine, tranny, and axles) and have reported a slight increase in mpg (about 1 - 2) as well. |

| in the rod, i run mobil one synthetic. it is alot better for higher performance engines that run in the 2500 and plus range. it costs more but i change my oil every 10000 miles or twice a year sometimes once. everytime i pull my oil it is the same color that it was when i put it in there. whatever you decide, do not go between the two every other oil change and make sure that you get ALL the original oil out before you put in synthetic. if you go mixing the two it will not be good on your engine. |

| Synethic will give you better mileage like stated above(1-2 mpg). You can go 10K between oil changes because the synethic does not break down like a regular. It stays clean because the fuel injected engines don't flood the cylinders with gas like a carburetor does. I use Mobil 1, change my filter every 3k and add a quart, than at 10K I change it. I put a timing chain in my 360 ci Dodge a couple of weeks ago, to do this you have to drop the pan. With 170,000 miles on the motor other than a little varnish the pan was clean, NO sludge, NO crud, it was amazingly clean for that number of miles. I will probably get "slapped" on the hands for this, but I would not put Slick 50 in. I have tried it in the past and could not see any difference. I could however see the advantage of synethic over regular oil. And as stated above, do NOT mix the two. They will not mix. Change to one or the other, and stick with that one. |

| Go with your gut. Mine says 10k is too many miles between oil changes. Oil picks up all the crud in the motor. I just cant stand the idea of having all the crud in there for that long.

| I agree with chevyguy. I'd rather change it every 3-5K miles with regular oil than assuming that every 10K miles with synthetic is ok. It's like GM's extended life dexcool... you could wait till 150,000 miles to flush it, but would you really want to? ps. I hate dexcool... it's liquid evil.
