Front door popping noise

My friend has a 2004-5 Chevy HD 3/4 ton 4 door. She came by and the drivers door has a loud popping noise when you open it and close it. It is not the upper or lower hinges, but another "bar" for lack of a better word, that is midway between the hinges. It is attached to the cab and the other end goes inside the door. That is where it is popping. I have tried spraying some lube inside, but that has not helped. How does the door panel come off? Is there any special tricks to remove it?

our fullsize van has a similiar bar on the side door. it's to keep the door from opening to far. if you leave the door half open then the bar should be able to unlatch from the inside of the door so it will open farther. not sure if hers shares the same purpose though.

I have found the problem. The part costs only about $35.00. I do not see how this part would fail.
