89 chevy suburban oil pan help

Ok, my suburan is leaking oil from what i thought was the rear oil seal. i replaced it, and its still leaking... i figured it was just the oil pan gasket. so know im trying to get my pan back on and im cussing and screaming at the damned thing because i cant get it back on. i cant get it to fit right, and when i do get it in there, i take the gasket off the bolt holes on accident. is there an eaiser way to do this? i cant put any sealent on the gasket to fit it either because the dipstick slot wont allow me to to keep the gasket in tact with the pan. also, in my struggle, i put a good amount of oil on the gasket, i was wondering if that hurts my efforts to stop the leak.

if you put oil on that gasket with that permatex, you have just shot yourself in the foot. oil will not let anything adhere to anything it touches. thats why they put it in the engine. take some brake parts cleaner and spray on a blue paper towel and wipe down both surfaces until clean. put the permatex on the block and put the gasket up on that first. it will stay up there and wont move much unless you get froggy with it. why wont it go back up?? are you hitting something next to the block?? it should be a very simple install.

well, i just cleaned off all surfaces with rubbing alcohol and used silicone atv sealent to keep the gasket on there. im going to try to attach the pan tomorrow and im hoping that sealer sticks... any problems with the chemicals i used above?

cant say i ever used rubbing alcohol before, at least for that application. the only alcohol that i would use goes in the gas tank. just remember when you put everything back together, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE PAN BOLTS. i have seen that way too many times and youll be doing this all over again and might be extracting broken bolts as well.

Bradrhale: If he used atv sealent to hold the gasket in place now and waits until tomorrow to put the pan on won't the sealent have cured to the point that when he does put the pan on the sealent won't "squeeze" into the little spots and seal between the gasket and block? Just a thought when I read this.

i think i found a way around it. i put atv up there, and put bolts on right where the sealent was applied, so i think itll be cool.

larry, i didnt mean for anything to comeout about waiting. put the atv up on the block first, then put everything together. didnt mean for it to be taken the way you took it.

My mistake, Sorry about that.

And I have broken many bolts trying to get them out after someone tightened them too much.
