Could use some help-Clutch

Had a problem today--pushed in clutch to shift from 1st to 2nd, heard a loud pop-like metal breaking, and had a noticeable change in the feel of the clutch pedal-and also immediate trouble getting into all gears, shifter hangs and I have to really baby to get into gears. Also, it seems as if in first with the clutch fully depressed, the truck wants to roll(very slightly). Anyone able to steer me in the right direction?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like something in the clutch linkage broke. time to crawl under there and make sure nothing is broke or in a bind.

re:clutch

Yeah, I did a quick look, nothing obvious, was hoping someone had heard of similar symptoms to put me in the ballpark to start with. I can think of about 5 likely things, and 4 of them require pulling tranny to check, which I'll have to do , unless......................

You did not say what type of truck you had but on my 1987 full size the clutch arm actually broke.

It doen't sound like a clutch linkage problem, It sounds like you either broke some of the pressure plate fingers or one or mores springs on the clutch disk.
other things the it could be is the throw out bearing or the input shaft brearing.
all of these parts will cuase hard to shift into all gears

Good call from bobcat5544. More than likely not a linkage problem, you would notice a big difference in the pedal, if it even worked at all. Any of the bearings would make a fair amount of noise that would change when force is applied to the pedal. My vote is with the press. plate diaphgram.
Shouldn't be long before it lets you know.

RE:Clutch

Yeah, sorry--I bet some info on the truck would be useful. My bad. It's a 98 S-10 4 banger-2wd. Thanks for the great responses though!!! I agree that the likely culprit is the plate. I will be starting the tranny removal tonight. I'll post back when all done. Thanks again. Mac

Job Done --info For Anyone Interested

After teardown--I discovered a crack in one of the pressure plate fingers down at the disc, so only getting partial clutch release. I installed a new clutch disc, plate and throwout bearing. Had a hard time getting the old throwout bearing out, so I just dis-assembled it, then it fell off. New one didn't seem to want to seat true, but it seems OK in function. Got the kit for $140-- then had to pay Chevy dealer unholy price for correct tranny oil--$11 for one quart!! Couldn't find equivalent at any of my parts stores. Had good help-my sons and one of their buddies-which really made it bearable on my sorry old carcass. That's all --thanks, and good luck. Mac
