replacing axle bearing

Greetings Everyone,
I have noticed that the right rear on my 93 G-20 van sounds like I have a mudgrip back there, I have been told that it is an axle bearing going out, my question is do I have to take the cover off the rear end to get the axle out in order to replace that bearing, or is it a floating axle and all that is required is to pull off the brake drum, shoes, and backing plate.
I checked the grease in the rear end and it is full, so that's not the problem.

all information will be greatly appreciated,
Frank aka crazyhorse357

Depends on which bearing are going out. Cound be the carrier bearings, or the axle bearings. Either way the axles have to comeout and if its the wheel bearings, then the hubs have to come off.

Well there you go,
I didn't even know there were two sets of bearings,
how an I supposed to tell which ones are bad, I have repacked and replaced front wheel bearings, but never had an opportunity to work on the rear before.
Thanks for your swift response Chevyguy,
Frank aka crazyhorse357
