When you push the 4wd or 2wd buttons do you here the 4wd 2wd trying to engage or disengage? May have to crawl under it while some one else does the button pushing to hear it.

gmtech wrote a thread to me on that same issue. I have a 2000 with the same problem and it was the switch itself was bad. Cost about 100 bucks but saved alot of time. Thread is on page 22 and called 4x4 and fuel guage problems if you wanted to read what he had to say. Hope that helps.

similar thing happened to me

similar things happened to me not to long ago. i turned it on and it was in 4 low and i didn't realize it. i then got up to speed on the freeway. oops! it kind of hard to do even 50 in 4 low. and then when my dealership lifted it, they did a test drive to make sure everything was ok. while they were out the tested the 4wd. it wouldn't shift in to 4 at all. the replaced the computer ($860 ouch!! i love my warranty) but that still didn't work. after that it wouldn't shift into anything. it was stuck in neutral. sfter messing with it for another day, they figured out that the wiring from the computer to the motor that actually shifts in and out of 4wd was messed up. they rewired it and i have not havd a problem since. so you might want to check wiring are the motor. dont know if this will help but it probably wondn't hurt to at least look. thank for the info on my thread to by the way.

Yes still have alot of problems with the 4x4 switch itself and if it has been worked on for anything underneath the wiring the other guy wrote about can rub on the front driveshaft near the transfer case if it had been knocked out of its retainer or misrouted, also alot of 02 sensor wiring rubs at the same place. There have also been alot of diferent bullitens for ground issues the biggest one is on the body mount right below the drivers door it has 1 or 2 grounds mounted to the mount with a 13mm head bolt.
take the bolt out clean the mount and then find a nut that fits the bolt or get a longer one so that it can screw through the meatl and not just tap in like it is originaly. hope this helps> if you have someone that can read codes the switch sets one like a 2760 or something like that.
