Question Project Scottsdale

I have a 78' Scottsdale 4x4 auto trans 350 and want to make around 420hp on pump gas and run it in mud bogs and 1/8 mile ice drags. Is this possible and if so what parts do you suggest I use carbs, cams, heads, tranny, etc... Also I want to keep the stock bore.

just curious, but why do you want to keep the stock bore?? a stroked engine is capable of so much more torque and performance over stock, that it would be a great place to start to make 420 without replacing high dollar cams, heads, and carbs.

If you are planning on rebuilding the motor that is in it you will more than likely have to bore it anyways due to wear in the cylinders. Standard is +.030 giving you a 4.030 bore. Any good machine shop can bore they cylinders and line bore the main and cam journals for about $300. As for running pump gas as long as you don't have a high compression ratio you can still run pump gas. if you are running 9-10 compression you'll be fine running 93 octane

cost me about 500 to have my engine bored out .020 and line honed mains and a trip to the hot tank to clean 30 years of gunk off.

Make sure all your parts work together in the powerband you're trying to achieve. Getting a cam to match your compression ratio and stuffs like that.

I don't think boring is the answer. On my stock car we run a stock bore 350 w/ 6.0 H beam rods and 10.5/1 dome pistons w/ dart iron eagle heads and make enough ponies. Plus you can wrap it way tighter and if you ever do have a problem the option to maybe bore is still there later. Try going with lower gears. That may help a bunch.

I second what nate said about boring the engine. A set of high flowing heads (Edelbrock makes some nice ones) with a matching cam can get you where you want. Toughen up the rotating assembly on the bottom too. Again, I must stress this out because a lot of people just throw on after market parts without considering how they work together (their powerband of course).....pay close attention to it. Good luck with it and keep us posted on your project.

i can see that with a longer stroke. my father-in-law is a believer in the shorter stroke and would probably call you crazy but with what your are talking about is really bringing up your compression rate. this aint no car, its a scottsdale.

but it's a scottsdale that's going to go through the mud pit at 6500 and be able to hold it the whole way.
