2003 Silverado EVAP trouble codes

My truck has been sputtering at idle for a while, but runs fine so I replace the fuel and air filters with no change. A few days ago, my check engine light came on. I took it to the auto parts store and they ran the code thing and it says DTC P0449 EVAP Emission Control System Vent Vlv/Sol Malf and P0455 EVAP Emission Control System Leak (large).

Any suggestions? I ALWAYS make sure my gas cap is on tight, everytime I get gas. I don't know exactly what the EVAP is, but doesn't it have something to do with vacuum in the tank and recurculating fumes?? I don't really know where to begin here.

You can try and just throw parts on it but with the evap system we use a scan tool to comand the purge and vent valves closed and then fill the system with nitrogen and or smoke and search for the leak. So i'm not sure how a backyard mechanic could correctly diag and evap system. Yes you are correct that the fuel tank is a closed system inwhich when comanded the purge valve draws fumes from the tank putting it under vacuum and can control the vacuum with a vent valve which vents the fumes after they go through the charcoal canister.

^^^^I second that. There's like maybe four places you need to look at. Most simplest one and cost no money would be checking charcoal canister. Make sure is not clogged on the inlet where fresh air enters. The other would be the purge port thingy (I don't what you call it) on the throttle body. It should be sucking in (vacuum). The other parts are the hoses that are attached to these. Hope this helps.

What does this code mean? DTC P0449 EVAP Emission Control System Vent Vlv/Sol Malf ? Does that mean a vent is not doing what is supposed to do? I thought that I would check all of the wires and connections on everything I could see or feel around the tank. This all happened after it went from being really cold and icy to 60 in 2 days.(gotta love Kansas weather). I don't know if that could have any effect on it or not.

Well the "Vent Vlv/Sol Malf" if I could take a wild guess mean "Vent Valve/Solenoid Malfunction". I know that some of the Chevy trucks (at least the newer ones) emission parts is mounted near or on the gas tank because the engine bay has gotten too crowded. You might want to check around your gas tank.
