Sorry you feel that way. First of all, a faulty fuel pump wouldn't allow your truck to start. Secondly, a 1988, even if the mileage is low and the pump being submerged in gas since that time, is sure to fail along with other parts.....normal wear and tear. Thirdly, the pump is any where from $30 - $35.00 it doesn't cost $500 so I can assume you're taking it to a shop where you're paying for labor. You only need to replace the pump and not the whole assembly. The whole assembly can take you into the $200 - $300.00 range easily. Your truck starting and dying can mean a lot of things but since we're on the fuel subject, you could have a faulty relay. I think I asked you if your truck coded on one of your post..... you know, the "Check Engine Light" coming on but got no response. A lot of the members here could help you out.

If it's got tbi there is a sensor on the fuel injectors that lets the computer know the truck is running. On start up it will shoot fuel for around 5 seconds and if the sensors fail that's all the fuel you get, it automatically shuts the fuel pump off. The easiest way around that is to run a hot wire off a toggle switch or wire into the ignition with the fuel pump. If it's just an old beater then who cares but if you really like your truck you may want to fix it right.

Nate

Is this sensor used on the 99 S10 with 2.2l ? what sensor is it. I have a hard start condition and was wondering if this could be the problem....

I really don't know on that for sure. Most everything I've done is on late 80's early 90's fullsize trucks. Sorry. I wouldn't see why the sensor wouldn't be used as a safety on all vehicles though.

That's what the relay is for. At start up, the relay supplys the voltage to the pump until the oil pressure is up. Then the relay cuts out for the oil sender unit to kick in (voltage). In case of an accident the pump shuts off when the engine dies (no oil pressure). Or, like what happened to my brother at the stop light. He never checked his oil since he had zero oil leaks and because he changed the oil......don't know how long ago. His burb shuts off in the middle of traffic because of low pressure. heh, heh, heh.

Thanks Chevy808 for the clarification. It gives me some direction to diagnostic the hard start condition on my S10. I don't think i'm getting power to the pump on cranking until oil pressure comes up.
