it should not tick, a lot of trucks with a lot of miles do, if it started after he did the cam swap it may be wiping out a lobe, and if that's the case it may trash his whole engine due to the metal in the oil.

What was the last cam specs and what is the specs of the current cam?? What is the new valve clearance or lash for the new cam? It may need adjustments.

i am also wondering about the lifters. always install new lifters with a new cam. if it is a cam from another engine, use those same lifters in the same holes that they came from. does he have correct valve clearence between it and the rockers??
