| normally the 4 wheel drive doesn't usually come out till you're slowing down, it should never come out while accelerating or turning(i believe). My personal opinion is that 4-hi is ok up to the 35-40 mile mark. If you're going faster than that you probably don't need the 4 wheel drive in or you're overdriving the conditions. small turns are ok, not necessarily good, but won't break anything If you crank the wheel all the way to one side and make a u turn or something often, prepare for premature failure down the line. Other than pulling someone out, or off-roading most vehicles really don't need 4 wheel drive. True you can go though more, but in today's (usual) fast removal of snow and the like, 2wd is fine. I use 4wd on the farm and for pulling out the occasional stranger who took a wrong turn and ended up in the ditch. Most people just get a sence of "safety" with their 4 wheel drive. My brother thought it helped him stop faster, and others have thought pretty silly things. If anything, i think 4 wheel drive is a bad thing for most city trucks because people over drive the conditions believing that they can stop and handel the roads better than 2wd. It helps steering somewhat, but if you're using it for that, might be overdriving the conditions. Not saying you are, but be careful on how much "safety" you think the 4wd has. Just my $.02

| the only time i use four wheel drive is to get my light weight rear end through fresh snow covered intersections and pulling small stumps in the summer. to add to what was said earlier, all trucks are different. my blazer could shift on the go and my truck can't. the blazer disengaged after going in reverse and you can skip that step with the truck. four wheel drive will help you slow down better because you have four tires with resistance instead of two when you let off the gas, but it won't help you stop when you go to hit the brakes. also think of the transfer case like you would the reverse gear in your tranny, there not meant to go 60 mph no matter what the movies portray. cough 2fast 2furious cough
