rear end gear change

Im going to change my rear end gears from 3.23 to 3.73 or 4.10. It looks easy and Im pretty mechanically advised but the only thing Im worried about is setting the backlash so it doesnt whine. Anyone have any experience in this??

Yes. Backlash is important but you also have to preload the bearings and be carefull of the crush sleeve. It's not hard but tedious. Any gears should give you install instructions. They have to be followed to a T. Not trying to discourage you just showing some insight.

The easy way out is to find another rearend to just change out and be done with it if you've got no experience with the gear swap. But the only way to get the experience is to tackle the problem face to face!!

They're not that bad to change out, but like johnwayne said it is very tedious. I did my own as a first timer and still rolling with them 2 1/2 yrs later. Just take your time and do it right.

and thats why i like the ford 9" so much. i dont have to mess with all the junk. if i dont like the gears, i put in a new carrier. one of the only things ford got right (in my opinion).
