'88 Chevy Door Handles

Has anyone broke a door handle on their Chevy. My drivers side handle broke the other night and of course it broke with the door shut. If anyone has any tricks as to how to get the door open and repair it I would greatly appreciate the help. Thank you.

reply:

open the passenger door to get inside, then open the drivers door..

and you'll probably have to take your door panel off from the inside to replace it.

I know it isn't going to be fun. Kinda hoping for a miracle cure to get the door open then deal with it. I can feel the scrapes and cuts already.

its not near as bad as you think. very little mechanical workings in there. if there is something broke though, you can go to a junk yard for next to nothing to get another handle or if small cheal part, autozone will have it.

I broke a door handle just like you did about a month ago. My truck is a daily driver and the body shop got me for a $140.00 to fix it with bone yard parts.

If I had it to do over again (and the time) I would go to the bone yard and watch them take the part out of another truck. I am not positive you have to take the door panel off. There is a small plastic piece that gives up and is not a replacement part alone. You might even get the boneyard mechanic to install it for you.

that little plastic part you are referring to can be gotten at dealerships. it costed me about 10 or 15 but i know they carry it. you will have to take that panel off if you want the door to work.

Yea thats not too hard. I replaced both handles on my 88 chevy. All you need to do is pull off the panel and they are right there.

I had to replace the drivers side door handle on my 97 Z71 and it was a pain, not to shoot you down or anything. A dealership offered to do it, but I decided to make it my project. I had to take off the door panel, unhook all the electric going to it such as side mirror controls, take the glass window totally out (the worst part), you still dont have a clear view at the handle. The metal frame of the door still had it blocked, but I got it done, probably about 1 1/2 hours later.

the 88 is easy and if i remember right you do have to pull the inside panel to get in and replace the handle.

97z71 the handle is diffrent on his 88. i had a 89 chevy i replaced the door handles on and i also had a 97 i changed the driver side handle on. if i had to choose i would much rather change the 88 over the 97.
