2003 Chevy Transfer Case

Alrighty, here is a sad story. My girlfriend has a 2003 Siverrado half ton.She was in a remote area and had the ujoint go. Someone came along and removed the driveshaft so she could proceed in 4 wheel drive.
She had approx 100 miles to go before she could find a mechanic( this was on the Alaska Highway in the middle of nowhere). Before she could get to a garage she lost the ablility to move forward.
So now she has been told a rebuilt transfer case, they say she needs this is approx 4000.00 CAD. It was sujjested that she replace ujoint, remove front drive shaft and go south to a more reasonable service center. When she said this was what she would like to do she was told there is no front driveshaft, it is just one and you can't disable the front.
Can this be true. Doesn't sound like any 4 wheel drive I ever heard of.

She is single , on her own and feels like she is not getting the whole story. Anyone out there with an opinion that may be helpful?
Thanks

There absolutley has to be a front driveshaft. Even David Copperfield could not make the front differential turn without one. It also has to be removable.
Can't understand why she lost the ability to drive foward, and even if a u-joint was replaced, why not just put it back into 2wd, and drive home like normal? If the front output did fail, and the rear shaft was replaced, then the truck should still drive in 2wd... Might need a little more info here. Need to know why they believe that the t-case failed, and why they feel it is necessary to remove the front shaft, and if it is necessary, why they think it can't be removed???????

something smells fishy. but have heard it before. "You need an engine oil flush." "Your headlights are low on halogen." "Your spark plugs have run out of spark and need to be replaced??"
What do you mean by ability to move forward??
