Question whats the difference?

I have a friend that owns a newer ford ranger, and we got into a discussion yesterday, and it led to a puzzling question. Whats the difference between the push button activation for my 4x4 in my truck and the turn nob in his? the reason I ask is I was under the understanding that the push button is like an electronic switch, where as the dial he has is controlled by a magnet. I would prefer to have a mechanical shift lever on the floor anyway, but since I don't.......

Anyways, he sometimes has difficulty shifting into and out of four low, and ,mine never seems to have trouble. is there a difference between the switches?

Does nobody have an opinion here. or does no body know? Is the push button switch in my 1996 S10 Zr2 the same sytem as my buddy's 1999 ford ranger xlt, and are they electronic or magnetic? And are they dependable?

Both electronic and no they are not dependable. The conttrol a relay the applies power to the actuator tof the transfer case. I have replaced a ton of them. Did an 02 dodge last week Parts for the switch were $300 bucks. Gimme a floor shifter anyday.
