HEY GUYS, i am new here...but....

I have been reading the comments some of you guys have been saying for a while now, and it has helped me answer quite a few questions of my own. Now, junior3382 doesn't always seem to know what he is talking about, but the last question he has, i am curious about myself..... I have been curious what you guys think. I am looking at buying a s10 myself, but before i do, i would also like to know if the electronic shift 4wd is reliable. Is it better than the mechanical shift? Does it really have trouble getting into gear? i am curious what you guys think.

Welcome to the site.
I believe most eloctonic shift on the fly systems are prone to failure, as are most systems that require more moving parts. An electric window has a greater potential to failure due to its complexity over a manual one. Technology is such that it stilll is a reliable system, but failure is still greater.
As far as electronic shifting t-cases, and front axles, and hubs. These fall under the same circumstances, however, they only appear to fail when they are needed, like when it snows, or off-road conditions. This is because the 4x4 systems do not get used too often. Perhaps some of the reason they fail is partly due to the lack of use.
The more complex a system is, the greater the chances are for failure, it is really that simple.
Systems with both electronic, and vacuum signals seem to fail more often, and supports my "more moving parts" theory.
I have changed out three ESOF sytems in 3 of my trucks to manual systems. The manual engagement has yet to let me down.

So, if i bought a newer one with the ESOF as you put it, should I swap it out to mechanical shift? If so, how hard is that and how much would that cost? I am looking for something to play with off road, and I want the smaller wheel base of the s10. i have seen some done up right, and I love how they look, so i will get one, its just whether or not I go witht he 94-95 model with the shift lever on the floor or the 96-06 with the ESOF. What do you think?

Now what does this mean? I may not have the most experience in the world, but my opinion shouldn't be disregarded. I have had plenty of experiences that help me make descisions. Just because I am not always right doesn't mean that my opinion may not lead to an answer....

Hey, I wasn't upset, i just wasn't sure what you meant by that. My question was somewhat answered, so thanks. I have a 1996 Zr2 and i never have any problems with shifting the transfer case. i had a 1994 s10 reg cab that had the mechanical lever on the floor and I actually had more problems with that. It was controlled by vacuum hoses and they kept breaking due to age I think. If it were up to me though, i would have a direct mechanical lever connected to the transfer case, no hoses, no switches, I would trust that better. However, whether or not you can do a conversion, you would have to ask these guys here, they wouldknow more.....

I've replaced a few of the motors you guys talk about on S10 blazer and clones. Even a full size truck. It's a simple motor on the transfer case that pulls the transfer case selector. not a big deal, but expensive dealer only part. I think around 300 bones. I've also replaced a ton of the thermal actuators on the late model chevys- 88 and up. Stupid design. Part is dealer only about 120 bucks or so. I'd rather have manual hubs and a lever. thats just me.

How do i get those? Can I get those? Should I consider an older truck, or a different brand, like toyota, or jeep?
