Ok, need advice.... anyone.... I have really been looking for the right truck to own. I have found an S10 I really like, but want someone else's opinion. Its a 2002 Zr2 4x4. Its black and in good shape.... Here is the description the dealer gives.... Black exterior with grey cloth interior. V6, 3 doors, 4 wheel drive, air conditioning, power steering, power brakes, power door locks, power mirrors, front bucket seats, center floor console with storage, rear jump seat, front and rear cupholder, bedliner, hitch, sliding rear window, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, dual front impact airbag, passenger cancellable airbag. 99,289 miles. They are asking $11,950. I looked up KBB and they said around 14 thousand for retail, but this still seems high to me. Does this sound like a good deal?

What are they using as a deduct for the excessive miles? KBB still maintains average usage for a vehicle, (considered normal driving) is 12,000 per year. Average leasing companies charge $.15 (average) per mile over 12 k miles per yer. Under those guidelines, this vehicle would have a deduction of around $5800.00. That is based on the above figures. 5 yr old vehicle with 39,000 too many miles for the year at $.15 per mile is $5850.00. When they book it out for the bank, they will add for premium sound, and premium, as well as oversize tires, and every other little thing they can to pad the book value, but I still see this thing only being worth around $8500.00 tops.

Really, how do you know that? And how can i prove that? Cause if I could get it for 8000, it would be a great deal.... at least for me.

It is in the KBB. Just have to read all of it, and not just the parts the dealer tells you to read. Here is how you can get one over on them. Ask first about lease options on a new vehicle, any vehicle, because it does not mater, you are just needing a little ammo for later when you negotiate on the truck. What you are looking for, is exactly what we discussed in post two. Ask what average miles for a vehicle per year are, and how much the bank charges for excessive miles. You will find that my above figures are close enough to accomplish what you arer trying to accomplish. Once you are satisfied that both of you understand that normal wear, and tear is about 12 k miles per year, and the extra rate of depreciation is about $.15 per mile over that, then you simply turn the tables on them, and offer them the sales price minus the depreciation for excessive miles. Reminding them that you are not making these figures up, because you have just discussed them, and that these figures apply to all vehicles, and the truck is no exception. When that does not work, then offer full book for the truck, not low book, not in the middle, but full retail Kelley blue book, and then have them deduct the miles according to KBB guidelines. When it books for around $13,800, you can offer them more out of the kindness of you own heart, as long as they deduct for the miles like they should. Even if you settle on a $14,000 book value, and they deduct the $5800 for the miles, then this thing should sell for $8200.00 plus tax, and license, and so forth. They really can't argue the figures, because they are figures set by a company that places values on vehicles for banks to use, as well as the dealership that took this truck in on trade. Not to mention you have already discussed, and agreed upon normal wear and tear, and the values that the lending institutions, and dealers alike usse to place values on used vehicles. A little knowledge can go a long way. Stay strong, I am confident that they used a tactic similar to this when they placed an "actual cash value" on this thing when they took it in on trade. This dealership is not in this thing for more than $6,000 to $6,500 before reconditioning. You can make a deal here if you like it without getting taken to the cleaners. Good luck....

WOW! thats awesome. I am going to test drive it tommorrow, this is great info, i saw a 1999 Zr2 for around seven, but I would rather go newer for only a g more. If they don't negotiate, then I will move on. this is the best advice I have gotten yet....., thanks 75k30, I appreciate it!

the ZR2's are'nt a bad little truck, my moms a 2002 i beleieve only 55,000 miles one it and that little thing gets around good. drives great, gets good gas milage, not to bad stock off roading, plenty of power with a 4.3L, i would recommend it to any one who is'nt looking for a full size. my only problem with it is being used to driveing my jacked up monster, i feel my butt dragging on the ground when i get in it.

| Looking at your profile IKOS10, i see you live near me, and I think I know wich truck you are talking about. the one at Ricke Bros right? I recognise the description from their website. Anyways, I know their mechanic very well, he does all my work an my three vehicles, and I trust him implicitly. So, mechanically you should be fine. And if 75K30 is right, and you can get it for around eight grand then great. Thats a good deal. Hope it works out for you. ps, pm me sometime if you wanna go muddin' huh? I know a good spot!
