Unhappy codes

I have a question... Is there anyway to manually pull the codes on a 1988 Chevy 1500? I don't have a code reader for my engine (305) and I keep having the CHECK GAUGES light come on and off while I am driving. Any help would be great

The check guages light comes on only when one of the guages in the red. either low oil pressure, or high temp. The Check engine light is a separate deal. When does the light flash? Try to glance down when that happens and check the guages. Like a bonehead I let my truck run low on oil and it would flash when I stopped hard or went around a turn. A couple of quarts later I was all good. I have almost the same truck as you.

I can't remember which holes to use but under teh steering column there's a plug and if you put in a jump wire the service engine light will blink a number of times corresponding with the certian code. then just look it up in a book.

i tried to pull the codes on my truck with my scanner, because the check gage light keeps flickering on and off for the first few blocks of driving. the code reader will not pull any codes even when the light is on, the tech guy for the code scanner said it will only pull check engine codes. i am afraid you will have to go to a dealer to have it put on a machine.

You guys are confusing the "Check Guages" light with the "Check Engine Light" two seperate and unrelated lights...

I don't. Coolant might be more than water but you don't want to run straight water, or you'll have a nightmare of rust built up in the coolant system.
