Erratic Fuel Gage

Hello, I'm new to this forum. Normally a lurker, but I need some help today.
I have a 1987 Diesel Suburban (360,000 miles). The fuel gage started bouncing all over. The only time it is stable is when the tank completely full or almost empty.
I was told many years ago that this was caused when an electrical part in the system goes bad. I don't remember what that part was. Anyone out there know what it is and how to fix the problem?

it's the float on the sending unit this is a common thing with chevys. when they start to show some age then the gauge moves around. if you want to fix it then replace the hole unit. 2 chooses one drop the tank or remove the bed.

Agreed about the sending unit.

You might wanna make sure the unit is properly grounded and all connections are clean.
