Thumbs up stupid question :)

Ok so when my truck is parked on a hill and i want to put it in drive or reverse why is it so hard to put it in? There is so much resistance that it feels like the thing is going to bust, but when it is on flat ground there is no problem.... 1988 Chevy 1500 P.O.S. hehe

Setting the parking brake FIRMLY before putting the transmission selector in Park should eliminate your problem.

If you are already using this method, your parking brake is probably not holding as it should. If this is the case, then the rear brake shoes and drums, as well as the emergency brake cable(s), should be checked.

'Park' should not be used in lieu of the parking brake, especially on an incline or hill.

Park is really as simple as putting a wrench in the gears. so when its loaded, it can be hard to pull out. Of course your linkage may be worn, or in need of greasing making it even harder..

i'm pretty sure it is because the incline. Skylark said it best. The way park is designed you have a drum with teeth on the outside and when you place it in park you are moving a lever that engages the teeth that keep everything from spinning. On level ground it is no big deal but on a hill you have gravity wanting to pull it down which applies pressure to the park assembly making it harder. Hope it makes sence.

if you seen the size of the teeth, i know you would start using the ebrake alot more. not alot there when you think about that much weight being held be a few small piecec of metal.

The best recourse would be to replace whatever parts are bad.

It's not all that involved, turn the drums, replace the shoes and hardware kits, and check for broken or stretched emergency brake cable(s).

Also, the emergency brake cables do require an occassional adjustment.
