the 5.0 liter aka 305 ci is a vortec also. the main difference on the vortecs is the intake and heads i think.

i believe you're right in that the heads and intake is mainly th only difference. i will say it is not an uncommon problem at all to have issues with the water system (IE water pumps, upper intake gasket, stuff of that nature) to fail on the vortecs. and the A/C systems seem to be weak. but that may just be the SUV's

The vortec's came out in 96, but the newer interior was 95. 5.7 and 5.0 then, and then the change in 99 to the 4.8 and 5.3

I agree. 96 was the first year of the vortec. I don't remember if they made a 5.0 vortec. It would of been in the 96-98 body styles. the new body styles have a 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0

Actually guys the name "Vortec" first appeared in 1986 with the introduction of the vortex style combustion chambers in the 4.3L V6.
However RPO codes refered to most engines as vortec style, and were measured in cubic centemeters.
It was actually first introduced in 1985, but not used as a marketing campaign until the 86 model year. This was the LB4 engine, a "Vortec" 4300 90 deg V6, modeled after the 5.7L V8.
Little known fact, but even the RPO code LN2 an inline 4 cyl. 2200 cc's is considered a vortec head, and was also introduced in the 80's.

Amazingly enough, it was another G.M. marketing act of genius, since all heads create a swirl, or vortex as it travels through the runner to the combustion chamber. I will give the G.M. engineers credit however, they did do a pretty good job of using race inspired port designs for the street to help improve flow numbers, and they did, or do make pretty good power for the limited runner sizes. They are pretty effecient and make pretty good power.
