i am putting a new 4.3l vortec V6 engine in my 1996 c1500 w/t pickup truck. the manuals that i got at the auto stores are worthless so i am trying to find a shop manual or better. does any one know a good place to get a download?

Welcome to the site.
Most manuals that you can purchase from the parts store are fairly comprehensive, though generic, they do a pretty good job.
Do you have specific questions? An engine swap is a fairly straight foward process, and there should be very little grey area.
Maybe we can help.

I am with you there. You can go to AutoZone.com and trtrieve many of the shop drawings for your vehicle. Everything is printer friendly, and you shaould be able to find everything you are looing for.
