Excessive cranking 86 Chevy

My truck is a 86 P/U with a 350 (not original, probably from a van a year or two newer) carb, HEI. When I try to start it cold a lot of times it will almost start then die. Then I try to start again and it wants to crank for 5-10 seconds while I pump the throttle. Once it starts it runs fine. Sometimes it even takes a few seconds to start it hot. What could cause this? Maybe needs a tune up? The carb was just adjusted over the winter.

could probably use a tune up. Timing might be a little to far advanced. Might want to give it a check.

I'd say timing or spark. But it could be one of a million things really.

Thanks. I'll start with checking the timing. I figure it needs a t/u anyway.

Sounds to me more like the fuel pump bud. If the diaghram is bad, or leaking, it will not hold pressure and allow the fuel bowl to drain. Once the bowl is empty, it takes a while to crank until it fills again. Once it does, she runs fine. It mat even run, and start well untill it sits for a while and the fuel drains back out of the bowl.
You could change the mechanical pump, or install an electric one, and a regulator. The easiest is to just install a new pump. SBC pumps are a dime a dozen. Two bolts and presto, thing should start every time.

i would say more of a fuel pump problem instead of a tuneup problem unless it has been a long time ago for a tuneup
