2000 Silverado A/C issue

Hello Chevy people, im new to this forum and this is my first thread.

I did do a search for my issue and found a few, but not the exact issue so I thought I would post up the problem and see what you guys (and gals) think.

I have a 2000 Chevy Silverado (small V8), the A/C works pretty good, gets very cold considering im in Las Vegas where it has been 100-107 the last few weeks. The problem is that the compressor seems to cycle on and off at intervals of about 10-20 seconds. This is my second Silverado and Ive owned three S10's and I seem to recall this issue in the past.

Do you guys think I can just buy a can of R134?? freon and fill it up and that will fix this issue? Is it likely that there is a leak? Is it possible that there are other issues with the A/C? Is it as dangerous as Ive read in other threads to add the freon from the can? How common is it for the cans to explode?? I dont want that, but also dont want to pay hundreds for a job I can do in 5 minutes for $20.

Thanks for any input, it is appreciated....

hey lendafish well first of all you do need to add r134a sence your compressor is cycling. i have added it to many many cars truck you name it. well you have to concider the temp there that is a killer on auto's. but go to the store and get you two cans and the guage. first start your truck and turn your a/c on high and max a/c. then put the guage on the low side witch well be the passanger side the silver canister and see what the guage reads. if it is in the blue it is full but with your problem it will be in the green so one can of r134a will do. and don't worry about the can expode on you. i have used about 250 cans and have never had a problem with it. why so many i'm a shade tree mach. and everybody calls me instead of a shop. well i hope that helped you out. and if i'm wrong someone will correct me
