HEI distributor questions

I am in the process of converting a '97 4.3l vortec to a carb setup. And am wondering if a 3.8l HEI distributor would work? I found one in a '83 monte carlo but not sure if it will work. I do have a V8 HEI distributor w/vacume advance. Is there any way to rework it internally for a V6? Different pickup or module? Will a V6 HEI cap and rotor even fit on a V8 unit? I dont have any experience with these units. Any help would great.

Plenty of ways to change the internals and yes the 229ci dist will fit. Now the problems will be if you have an early, or late 4.3 you. Some were odd fire, and some even fire, and the internals need to reflect this. You may spend a bunch of time on this. Why not just get an MSD that will work right out of the box? I tell you, it is worth the little bit of money. Less moving parts and greater reliability is way worth it in my book.
