| 1999 R/t hi im currently looking at a 1999 dakota R/T. It has 92000 miles and has new tires and the guy says that it is in excellent condition. I took it for a drive and it sounded great, but he said that it goes through oil pretty quickly. Every 3 or 4 times he fills up he puts about a quarter of a quart in it. It had been sitting on side of the road for a while and i didnt see any leak marks on the pavement. So is it just the 5.9 liter engine or is it leaking internally?? |

| it's either leaking it or burning it. if it is burning it it could be just some simple valve stem seals leaking by once the motor is shut off or it could be blow by cause by excessive cylinder wear.. I would go and look at it again and see if it smokes on startup (after sitting overnight) or if it smokes while driving.

| if the engine was at operating temp (220 +/- Degrees) and it was still smoking that is a good indicator that the motor has blowby meaning the rings and or cylinders are wore and would require a rebuild.

| wow that sounds expensive. Im thinking about taking the truck to a body shop and do the whole inspection thing and see what they say before i even THINK about buying it. If you have any other input just let me know. thanks |

| yeah I would recommend taking it to a mechanic and have him do a once over on it. You sound like you have a good plan.

| all dodge 3.9,5.2,5.9 have a plate that bbolts to bottom of intake manifold, they all leak causing engine vacuum to suck oil into intake causing excessive oil use erratic running pinging. go to dealer get these parts. 1. intake gaskets and intake bolts 2. manifold lower plate gasket(new design metal now) and bolts 3. htr pipe to water pump o-ring 4. thermostat gasket and thermotat? 5. you'll need rtv, coolant, oil/oilfiler if your not good with your hands, mechanic, you might want to bring to dealer, it's about 4-5 hour job in labor manual. |
