Sputtering problems

Hey I am new to the forum and looking for some help!
I am having some problems with sputtering. I noticed it this weekend. I was doing between 50-55 mph and it started sputtering very bad. Bad enough to make me pull off the road. It happened each time I would get between 50-55mph. Monday I drove it to my first appointment and it did the same thing. It also started doing it anytime I hit a hill. I finally got a check engine light and checked it. The codes were for general misfire and misfire of #1 & #8. I pulled the plugs and they looked fine. Made sure they were gaped correctly. I reinstalled and it did the same. I then re-ran the wires to make sure they were not touching and ran it for a little while this evening. It wasn't as bad, but it did it once real bad going up a hill. On Monday of last week I noticed that my back up lights were both out. All fuses look good. Not sure if the two are related. Any ideas? Your help is appreciated!
I haven't done anything different in my driving except use the AC this weekend when it started.

Thanks,
Joe

Could be injectors... or the dist. itself.... these sputtering problems are hard to diagnose sometimes.

Just had something very similar happen to me. My #8 plug fouled due to oil.
Was on my wa to work, and all of a sudden it felt like i was missing a cylinder, just missing, sputtering. Was less apparent at higher speeds (freeway). But one the way to the mechanic, I ha to take the side streets. Anyway, mechanic cleared the engine light, removed #8 plug, and the ceramic was completely gone. It had literally burnt off, along with a rather large carbon build up. He mentioned it could be valve seals, or piston ring. But more then likely valve seals. I had him change the plugs, and will keep an eye on it, and see how long it takes to happen again. Another possible option is the intake gasket (according to a ASE mechanic at work who owns a 2001 3/4 ton with the 5.9l. His #8 plug went bad also but got it under warranty).

Thanks for the help. It stopped for now so hopefully it doesn't come back. If so, I will update you if I find out what went wrong.

Do not think for an instant that just because it stopped that it ran away. I had an issue with my blazer... kept throwing codes for what seemed like no reason what so ever... seemed like nothing was wrong, and either me nor anyone who looked at it could tell of there was something wrong. All the computers even said it was running perfect. A month later it is now in the middle of a heart transplant due the engine just blowing up. Out of no where a peice of metal from an unknown origin seemed to be the culprit all along and found its way into my intake and down into the cylinders.... caused all kinds of problems. Anyways, engines are a lot like us physically, just because the symtoms are gone does not mean the problem is gone... just dormant. I think my whole point was you may want to get it tested, and still look for it. I wish the best for your luck, but experience has led me to believe otherwise.
