95 Dodge 4X4 problems :)

Hi again. I know, I just posted a thread about my Rangers four wheel drive problem, but I am more worried about the Dodges, as it seems to be a pretty big issue as far as the truck goes.

Now, here is the scoop. The four wheel drive doesn't work. However, when I am doing stop and go driving, sometimes the t-case selector will try to pop into four wheel drive, and make a HORRIBLE grinding noise. I would really like to figure out why my four wheel drive doesn't work, as I have no idea about anything on these trucks. The shifter goes into all the gears, but the truck doesn't actually put the truck in gear.

Somebody mentioned on another forum that if I used a posi lock disconnect I can get the four wheel drive to work, but I really don't know if I should go that route or just fix the current problem.

Also, my rear end is going out in the truck (will be rebuilt soon). Could this be something related to the four wheel drive not working, or not?

Anyway, again, thanks for any help. I am trying to get both trucks back into 100 % running condition again.

I just went out and checked the front end of the truck. Looks like the drive shaft could use some new cleaning up, but it looks like it's in good shape still. Everything looks like it's in order with the diff too, so I am not sure if the front end is the issue here. I also checked the wiring that is under there (glanced), but don't know enough about it to make a true judgment other then everything looks hooked up correctly.

I'll take some pictures of everything later this week. Maybe those will help you guys help me out better?

Does your 4wheel drive light come on when you shift into 4 high. If it does not then your problem may be a broken vacuum line to the front end. If the slip yoke in the front end does not engage the axles the axles the front end will not pull. The slip yoke takes the place of the old style locking hubs.

No, the light doesn't come on.

So the truck's 4X4 system is vacuum operated then? Didn't know that.....great.

There are two vacuum line going to the actuator for the front axle. If you start the truck and swap the lines that should make your front end engage and your light to come on. That should tell you if it is a vacuum problem unless the other line is broken too.
