Angry crazy cummins

Hi guys. I'm brand new here and need some help. I just bought my first dodge (01 2500 cummings 4x4). Some days this truck is great. Sometimes not so much. At times when I leave the house or work, I can try to accelerate and it's like the engine is just idling. Like the linkage isn't hooked up. It is though. I can stop, put it in park then try it again and it goes. Also when I get behind traffic in od running low rpms, it does the same thing. You can floor it and nothing happens. Takes 4 or 5 seconds before it will go. It's like it's just idling. I have no engine or warning lights going off. It does show to be running pretty hot. Please help!

Welcome to the site:

What is the relationship between the high temps and this problem?
These are high engine temps, or high EGT's?
First thing that come to mind is the injector pump, but lets see what other variables are here for us to look at.
Do these symptoms go away when it cools down?

Cooling down has nothing to do with it. It does it sometimes when I first start the truck in the morning. I was just curious if it was supposed to run that warm. I've been running throttle body chevys for years and they always ran much cooler than this. I do have another question. Some of you say TPS. Makes sense. I was noticing that I have no cat, or muffler. Just a big old piece of pipe from the motor to the back of the truck. Could this have anything to do with it?

The only diesel I've ever owned before this was an old 5.7 olds, which really doesn't count. So any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the replies.
