go ahead and buy a rebuild kit for it. the kit will come with an exploded view of the carb. take it one step at a time with a good size clean table and everything will work out. just be mindful that the check balls underneath springs like to jump out and roll away alot. not hard and can be done in under 30 mins.

Slow air curcuit could be blocked and preventing the thing from getting metered air. Does the engine get wicked fat (rich) when it is trying to idle?
Have you verified any vacuum leaks?

Have a spray carb cleaner so you can make sure the internal channels are clean
