2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Reg. Cab

I am new to the truck world (in that I have never owned one yet), but have always wanted one. How many miles could one expect to get out of a 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 and what are the major repairs that usually are necessary on this model?
The reason I ask is that I have my eye on one, but it has around 125k miles on it and they are asking $5,999 (is this a fair price). I'd hate to buy a truck thats is going to require a ton of work to keep it going.

Today amount of miles is less important than how it was used. And 125,000 HWY miles is no bid deal. I would say as long as it don't smoke, or make funny sounds and you drive it right it should have another 125,000 miles left in it. Is this truck 2 or 4 wheel drive? Automatic or manual shift? Dodge is famous for a weak drive line in these trucks. 4X4 I would make sure the transfer case works in ALL ranges. And drive the heck out of it if it is automatic to make sure the tranny is strong and shifts well. Also in my opinion (even as much as I love Dodge) is that Dodge has one of the weakest front suspensions ever made. Not just your truck but in general from the 70's to today. But man Dodge makes good power. How is the body? Where are you located as that will affect the price?

The truck is an automatic 4x4 located in Northern West Virginia. The body is in pretty good shape although i notice about a 4 inch crack in the hood overlying a dent. What do you mean by the transfer case, sorry about my ignorance on the topic, but as a new truck person you have to start somewhere.

What should I look for on the undercarrage, should the axels be rust free or is some rusting ok?
